Melisa & Brandon, the husband & wife duo behind Anchor & Atlas Travel.

Brandon

Some of my earliest memories of travel are the annual summer trips my family took to the mountains of New Mexico and the long drives to southern Oklahoma to visit my aunt and uncle’s farm. Those trips were simple, steady traditions I looked forward to every year. My first “big” adventure came at ten years old with a trip to Hawaii. It was the first time I realized how wide and different the world could feel beyond our usual road trips. But travel truly became part of who I am when I discovered the Caribbean through SCUBA diving. My first blue-water dive in the Cayman Islands was unforgettable, with brilliant coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and my first experience with true island time. Since then, places like Belize, Mexico, and especially Roatán, Honduras have continued to call me back. The Caribbean feels like a second home.

Today, my approach to vacations could be described as structured but flexible. I believe in anchor experiences that give a trip shape, but I also believe in “planned spontaneity,” leaving room to explore a hidden café, linger on the balcony, dance a little longer, or simply goof off. I love the research and the details, knowing that when embarkation day arrives, everything is exactly where it should be. But once the trip starts, the plan should serve you, not the other way around. I have seen too many vacations turn into military operations, and that is not why we get on a plane.

For me, great travel planning creates structure without suffocating the fun. I want our clients to feel excited, cared for, and completely de-stressed in the planning process, like we’re their partners in the journey even if we are not sailing or flying alongside them. If you love cruises, Caribbean escapes, and family adventures as much as I do, you are in good company.

Favorite Destination: Roatan, Honduras.  I love the snorkeling and SCUBA there.

Still on His Bucket List: The Mediterranean and the Adriatic

First International Trip: Cayman Brac, The Cayman Islands… just a few months after getting SCUBA certified in Texas lakes.  This blue water trip definitely spoiled me.

What’s always in his carry-on: My Kindle.  While getting morning sunlight on the balcony (or when I’ve been banished from the room for waking up well before anyone else), reading a good book has long been a part of my relaxation routine.

Travel gear he can’t live without: My backpack.  Good for carry-on and for excursion day trips.

The travel bug bit me at a young age, and I still remember how excited I was for my very first plane ride at 7 years old. Travel has a way of opening our eyes, deepening our connections, and creating the stories we carry for a lifetime. That feeling has never faded. I still get butterflies heading to the airport for a new destination, and that’s the experience I hope every client feels before their own trip begins.

My travels have taken me across the U.S., including Hawaii, California, and Florida, and internationally to Mexico and Japan before meeting Brandon. We honeymooned in San Francisco and Napa Valley, touring beautiful wineries, floating over the countryside in a hot air balloon, and surviving the scariest cab ride of our lives. Since then, our adventures have continued together, and later with our children, from cruising Alaska and the Caribbean to exploring Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia.

Over the years, I’ve realized that while “going with the flow” gives a trip freedom, thoughtful preparation makes travel feel easy. The smallest details often make the biggest difference, and when I plan our own vacations, I think beyond the main experiences and into the background logistics that support them. How we’ll move from the airport to the hotel with everyone’s luggage. When cruise check-in opens. When dining reservations become available. What excursions tends to fill quickly. I love knowing that when embarkation day arrives, the important pieces are already in place, not so the schedule feels rigid, but so the experience feels calm, seamless, and ready to be enjoyed.

To me, a well planned vacation doesn’t feel busy or over scheduled. The key experiences are secured, there’s space to breathe, and you come home with memories, not “I wish I had known” regret. That’s the heart behind what I do and the way we guide our clients at Anchor & Atlas Travel: thoughtful preparation, honest advice, and helping you Journey Well.

Favorite Destination: Any Royal Caribbean ship with a Flowrider. My mid-life crisis my have been learning to boogie board. I love to take part in their 360 competitions and am proud to hold my own with the teenagers that dominate the competition field. An actual place? Cozumel - it feels like a second home and is where I had my first blue water SCUBA diving experience.

Still on Her Bucket List: Antarctica and Galapagos.

First International Trip: An All-Inclusive resort in Mexico

What’s always in her carry-on: At least two flavors of Chapstick for the kids and a Burt’s Bees lip balm too.

Travel gear she can’t live without: Pop-up clothes hamper.
